Byizid Love For His Mother
The history of Islam is rich with the lives of great saints, scholars, and spiritual leaders. Among these towering figures, the name of the Sufi saint Bayazid Bostami (RA) stands out, not just for his profound knowledge, but for the depth of his character. One of the most cherished and widely shared stories from his life is not of a grand sermon or a miraculous feat, but a simple, heart-touching incident involving his devotion to his mother. This story remains a timeless lesson on the virtues of filial piety and the extraordinary spiritual rewards of serving one's parents.
One bitterly cold winter night, Bayazid Bostami was resting at home when he was awakened by a voice in the dark. It was his mother, who had woken up feeling very thirsty. She asked her son for a glass of water. Bayazid immediately rose from his bed, eager to serve her. He walked to the kitchen and reached for the water pitcher, only to discover that it was completely empty.
He did not hesitate, nor did he feel any annoyance at the inconvenience. Outside, the night was freezing; the wind was sharp, and the distance to the nearest well was considerable. Without a second thought, he picked up the empty pitcher, stepped out into the biting cold, and made the long trek through the dark. He braved the freezing temperatures, found the well, and carefully filled the pitcher with fresh, cool water.
When he finally returned home, he went to his mother’s bedside to offer the water. However, he found that she had already drifted back into a deep, peaceful sleep.
Bayazid Bostami faced a difficult dilemma. He realized that if he woke her, he would disturb her much-needed rest. Yet, if he simply placed the pitcher down and went back to his own bed, she might wake up later feeling thirsty again and be unable to reach the water. He could not bear the thought of her waking up and feeling neglected.
Choosing the path of absolute devotion, Bayazid decided to wait. He stood by his mother’s bedside, holding the heavy pitcher of water in his hands. The hours ticked by. The cold of the night intensified, and his limbs began to grow numb and stiff. He did not move an inch, fearing that the slightest sound might wake her, and he remained determined to be ready the very moment she opened her eyes.
He stood there all night, enduring the physical agony of the cold, fueled only by his love for his mother. As the first light of Fajr touched the horizon, his mother finally awoke. She looked up and was overwhelmed to see her son standing there, shivering, with a pitcher of water in his trembling hands.
Upon realizing that he had stood the entire night just to ensure she would not have to wait for a drink, her heart overflowed with emotion. She raised her hands in prayer: "O Allah! Be pleased with my son Bayazid, just as I am pleased with him!"
It is said that this sincere prayer, born from a mother's immense satisfaction and a son's selfless sacrifice, was the foundation of the spiritual heights Bayazid Bostami reached. His story teaches us that true success often begins at home, in the simple, selfless acts of kindness toward those who gave us life.
