Happiness Lies in Contentment

 

Once upon a time, there lived a poor cobbler named Rahman in a small town. He mended shoes from morning till night in a tiny wooden hut. Despite his poverty, Rahman was always cheerful. He would sing beautiful songs while working, and his face always carried a bright smile. He was deeply content with the little money he earned each day, thanking God for his food and shelter.

Next door to Rahman lived a very wealthy businessman named Mr. Chowdhury. He had a massive mansion, expensive cars, and servants rushing around him. Yet, Mr. Chowdhury was always stressed and unhappy. He spent his nights worrying about his stock markets, business losses, and thieves. He hadn’t slept peacefully in years. Every day, he felt annoyed hearing the poor cobbler singing happily next door. He wondered, How can a man with nothing be so happy?

One day, Mr. Chowdhury decided to play a trick. He called Rahman to his mansion and handed him a bag full of gold coins. "Take this, Rahman. This is a reward for your hard work," he said. Rahman was shocked and overjoyed. He rushed home and hid the bag under his bed.

That night, everything changed. Rahman couldn't sleep. He kept waking up at every little sound, thinking someone was coming to steal his gold. He couldn't sing the next morning because his mind was heavy with fear and worry. For three days, he lost his peace, his sleep, and his beautiful songs. The gold coins had brought him immense wealth, but stolen his happiness.

Finally, Rahman realized the truth. He took the bag of gold coins back to Mr. Chowdhury and returned it with a polite bow. He said, "Sir, thank you for your generosity, but this wealth has taken away my peace. I prefer my simple life."

From that day on, Rahman began to sing happily again. He understood that true happiness does not depend on expensive possessions or huge amounts of money; it purely lies in contentment with what one has.
