 Noise pollution, also known as sound pollution, means the presence of excessive, loud, or unwanted sounds in the environment that cause discomfort and harm to human health and other living organisms. In today’s urbanized world, it has become a severe and growing problem, especially in big cities and towns. Unlike air or water pollution, noise pollution cannot be seen, but its harmful effects are felt constantly in our daily lives.

There are many causes of noise pollution. The primary source is the unrestricted honking of hydraulic horns by buses, trucks, and cars on busy roads. Loudspeakers used during various social, political, or religious events also contribute greatly to this problem. Moreover, construction activities involving heavy machinery, mixers, and hammers produce deafening sounds. Factories, mills, and low-flying aeroplanes also generate a huge amount of noise. In many cases, a lack of public awareness and weak laws make the situation even worse.

The effects of noise pollution on human health are very damaging. Constant exposure to loud sounds can lead to a loss of hearing, severe headaches, high blood pressure, and heart disease. It also causes mental stress, irritation, and insomnia (sleeplessness). The worst sufferers are the sick, the elderly, and school-going students. Students cannot concentrate on their studies or exams when there is loud music or honking outside. To control noise pollution, the government must enforce strict laws against the use of hydraulic horns and loudspeakers. Industrial zones should be shifted away from residential areas. Most importantly, general people should be made aware of the dangers of loud sounds to ensure a peaceful and healthy environment.
